現在は領域長として，生態系計測研究領域で行なわれている研究全般

地理情報システム (GIS)
リモートセンシング
農業環境リスク指標
統計解析

などに関して，統括的な仕事に従事している。これらの空間データ解析や，リスク解析など，わが国の農業環境研究において，高度な統計的手法が適用されることを目指している。

専門分野は応用統計学であり，農業研究分野で使われる実験計画法，およびデータ解析のための応用統計手法を広く研究している。とくに最近は，現場のデータ解析で広く使われている「多重比較手法」に関する研究を続けている。

片側検定と両側検定を統合した信頼区間
(Journal of the American Statistical Association, 1999)
多次元正規分布の分布関数を正確に計算するアルゴリズム
(Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, 2003)

など，理論的に新規性をもつだけでなく，応用性の高い手法を開発した。
