Intensified land use is a key driver in the widespread loss of biodiversity and compromises the delivery of ecosystem services. Globally a number of mitigation and adaptation strategies are being implemented to preserve or enhance the provision of these critical services. In the European Union (EU), many of these strategies are focussed on agricultural landscapes which dominate land use. Agricultural policy in the EU has moved from an emphasis on food and fibre production to incorporating the delivery of a wide range of services (carbon sequestration, water quality, pollination, pest control, soil fertility) to enhance ecosystem multifunctionality. The main mechanism for this delivery has been the introduction of agri-environment schemes (AES) whereby farmers are paid to manage their land for the benefit of landscape, wildlife or historic features.

Agri-environment schemes have been in existence in England for over twenty years although biodiversity conservation was not the main focus of the programme. However the Environmental Stewardship (ES) scheme, introduced in 2005, includes many options targeted at the conservation of a range of valued farmland taxa and reversing declines in arable biodiversity. The principle element of ES is Entry Level Stewardship (ELS), a ‘whole farm scheme’ open to all farmers and land managers. ELS aims to encourage large numbers of farmers and land managers across England to deliver simple yet effective environmental management.

The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) has a long history of research and development to enhance biodiversity in the farmed landscape and has contributed to the formation and testing of ES options. Removal of land from agricultural production to create wildlife habitats has proved to be the most effective and practical means of providing habitat for many taxa. The most effective options are those specifically targeted to the requirements of declining taxa. Recent work has focused on how landscape context, especially the availability of semi-natural habitats, interacts with faming to determine local community structure and modifies the response to options.

In this paper we will outline the impacts of different options on key taxa and functional biodiversity at the field, farm and landscape scales. We will report on studies that compare the effects on biodiversity of conventional intensive arable farming with typical ES options and enhanced and targeted ES options. Our results show that both habitat quality, food resources, and the abundance, diversity and population dynamics of key farmland taxa (including key groups of invertebrates) are significantly enhanced by both targeted local management and enhancements at the landscape scale.

Soil benchmark is a basis for the establishment of soil quality standard for preliminary risk assessment of contaminated soil at a regional or country scale. Two methods were introduced to calculate soil benchmark. One is based on geochemical baseline, which is widely applied in mineral exploration. This method could be performed with the content of reference elements such as Fe and Ti that accumulate in soil in the process of pedogenics and are little influenced by human activity generally. Based on the reference elements, soil background could be calculated and applied to determine the accumulation of heavy metals in soil due to the impact of human activities. The other method is based on the consumption of agricultural productions which will uptake contaminants from soil during growth since it is important to address the potential harmfulness of the accumulated soil contaminants to human beings. Therefore some empirical models were developed to predict the uptake of heavy metals by different types of crops from soil. Based on the established empirical models and reference does (RfD) of toxic metals recommended by USEPA, a soil screening value could be calculated to avoid crops cultivation in contaminated soil in view of the human health protection.

Key words: Soil environmental quality, Risk assessment, Uptake factor, Soil quality standard
