Changes in adaptation potential of irrigation of crop production under changing climate Masashi Okada 伊川
hirokiikawa@affrc.go.jp
要旨

Replacing rainfed cropping system with irrigated one is deemed an effective adaptation measure of agriculture for climate change across many regions of the world. However, many agricultural impact assessments of climate change have not yet fully integrated with dynamic water availability scenarios. Hence, we assessed the changes of adaptation potential of irrigation under changing climate by using a crop-river coupled model, CROVER, with climate change scenarios and irrigation area expanding scenarios. The results showed the adaptation potential substantially varied by region of the world. This is due to the changed competition of irrigation water across regions within a watershed associated with the change in rainfall patterns and increased ET rate.

Nitrogen moderates climate change impacts on rice production Toshihiro Hasegawa 伊川
hirokiikawa@affrc.go.jp
要旨

Nitrogen (N) was a major driver of the increase in rice production in the 20th century, which has helped to provide adequate supply to the booming population. It increases leaf area, canopy light interception, and the rate of photosynthesis per unit leaf area, all of which lead to an increase in biomass. On the other hand, heavy use of N has increased the environmental load from rice agriculture. Future rice production must meet the growing food demand while reducing the environmental load from agriculture under global climate change. To this end, we need to understand complex interactive effects of N nutrition and climate change on rice production. In this talk, I will discuss some key interactions among N and climate change for rice physiology and rice production.

(Creating virtual life histories in real experimental populations to understand ecological dynamics)
William A. Nelson

Is game theory in plants useful: the case of climate predictions and crops. Prof. Dr Niels P.R. Anten
(Professor of Crop and Weed Ecology Centre for Crop Systems Analysis)
伊川
hirokiikawa@affrc.go.jp
要旨

Evolutionary game theory is now widely used to analyse natural selection in plants. Among other things, it shows that populations of plants with characteristics that would maximize community-level performance are not stable against invasion by plants that invest more in competition, and that many natural plant communities are therefore not optimally functional in terms of carbon uptake, yields or other functions. This situation can be phrased as a tragedy of the commons (TOC). Many models that predict vegetation responses to climate change and associated vegetation climate feedbacks however ignore this effect of competition. The first part of the presentation will explore how inclusion of evolutionary game theory in vegetation models may lead to different predictions of climate change effects. Also, in agriculture the objective is often to maximize community level yields, and this contradicts with the above mentioned TOC. The second part of the presentation explores how knowledge of TOCs has and can be utilized in crop production.
