Research Scientist (Tenure track researcher) on the Dynamics of Radioactive Nuclides in Cropland, and Assessment of Their Environmental Impact
Position Closed
Outline:
The National Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences (NIAES) invites qualified applicants for one position as Research Scientist (Tenure track researcher) on the dynamics of radioactive nuclides in cropland, and assessment of their environmental impact.
Contents of work:
After the accident at the Tokyo Electric Power Company Fukushima nuclear power plant, contamination of the neighboring farmland by artificial radionuclides has been widely confirmed. As a result, treatment of the contaminated soil and the development of technical solutions for reducing radioactive contamination in crops are urgent challenges. Despite past research in Japan and other countries, knowledge on the agro-environmental dynamics of artificial radionuclides, such as 137Cs or 90Sr, and the best ways to assess their environmental impact after a nuclear test or nuclear plant accident, are still inadequate worldwide. Therefore, the researcher in this position will be expected to carry out research to clarify the dynamics of these radionuclides in the environment (such as various soils) in order to gauge their potential contribution to environmental impact assessments and the development of decontamination measures for farm products.
Keywords: artificial radionuclide (137Cs, 134Cs, 90Sr, 131I, etc), clarification of agro-environmental dynamics, soil, environmental assessment, crop pollution, pollution risk reduction
Rank: Full-time
Deadline for applications: 2012/6/15
Starting Date: 2012/10/1
Qualifications:
Candidates must have acquired a doctorate in a relevant research area by the time of their employment and, have or plan to obtain the First Class Radiation Protection Supervisor qualification. Candidates must be proficient in English and must be willing to master moderate to a good level of Japanese conversation skills during their employment. Candidates also must have an in-depth knowledge of radiation physics/chemistry and radiation environmental monitoring, and have experience studying radioisotopes or stable isotopes, and must be interested in the dynamics of radioactive materials in the soil, their environmental impact, the transition/absorption from soil to crops, and migration within the plant body or metabolism, and have a background in environmental chemistry, soil science or plant nutrition.
